5 Things to Look Forward to This Autumn

autumn morning frost

Only a couple of weeks ago a friend told me she was feeling a bit blah; going through the motions of life if you will. She put it down to having nothing to look forward to. It can feel a bit like that when you return from your annual summer holiday can’t it? The holiday blues are most definitely a thing.

Now that the barbecue has been put to bed, the evenings are drawing in and the sun tan lotion is firmly at the back of the cupboard, what is there to look forward to? What does autumn have that summer doesn’t?

Autumn is actually one of my favourite seasons so already it’s off to a flying start. Having written a ‘things to look forward to this summer’ post back in June – which feels like a life time ago – I realised the incredible value in writing stuff down. Whether autumn is your favourite or least favourite season, dwelling on the positive is a really good exercise.

What have I got to look forward to this autumn?

1.  A Family Holiday to Cornwall

The last time we headed to Cornwall as a family, was circa 2006. At the time we had a 6 year old, a 4 year old and an almost 2 year old in tow, which sounds like a recipe for disaster but rather like a well-known lager, it was ‘probably’ one of the best holidays we’ve ever had. The weather might not have been the best but we hunkered down, embraced the fresh air and slept. In fact my husband slept for 12 hours every night on that holiday and has never forgotten it!

We are aware that as the children get older, our family holidays will be fewer and further between (one can live in hope ?). If I’m honest, holidays with teenagers can often be harder than holidays with toddlers (sorry to break this news to you) so for both of these reasons, choosing a destination can be tricky.

Cornwall holds a special place in our hearts so we wanted to return as a family for what *might* be the last time. We’ve booked a 4-bedroom holiday cottage on the beach with dog walks, a bit of surfing and lots of reading to look forward to. I cannot wait.

2.  Birthday Season

I love a birthday – one whole day when you get to celebrate that person being alive for another year. What’s not to love?

Autumn is birthday season in our house, in fact we’ve already celebrated two birthdays in September. Not everyone in our family shares in my joy of birthdays but they do their very best to make my day special because they know it’s important to me. This year, my 47th birthday will be spent in Cornwall. It will be interesting to see how that one pans out!

Three weeks later we will be celebrating my youngest daughter’s 17th birthday which means another driver on the road and this time I am genuinely a little bit scared (if you live in my area, you should be too).

3.  Good TV

I actually really look forward to the TV in autumn; I think the channels realise that no one really watches TV in the summer so they store up all the good stuff ready for an unveiling in September.

The only problem? There’s so much good stuff on that I never want to go out! Thank goodness for catchup TV eh? I’m looking forward to the new Anna Friel drama airing on our TV screens next week – Butterfly. If you haven’t seen the trailer, Anna plays the mother of an 11 year old transgender child and Alison Steadman – another one of my favourites – stars as the child’s grandmother. It looks set to be a (very well acted) emotional rollercoaster ride.

4.  A Theatre Trip

A few months ago, a good friend asked me if I fancied going to see Dream Girls in London. Her place of work offers all employees the chance to grab theatre tickets at greatly reduced prices. Let’s just say that It didn’t take me long to answer!

I love the theatre and going with a friend makes it all the more fun. Have you seen Dream Girls? This will be my first time and I’m really looking forward to an evening of song, dance and glitz. I imagine there might be a glass of Prosecco (or two) consumed as well.

5.  A Night Away

If you’re a regular here, then you’ll know that I’m a big fan of making sure the OH and I get regular time on our own. Sometimes it feels inconvenient (and he has to persuade me that everything will be okay) but we hugely benefit from 24 hours away from our usual routine and dare I say it…the demands that come with family life.

Now that our children are in their mid to late teens, we are able to leave them at home and it makes it so much easier to do. We aren’t going far, just a little inn about 40 minutes away from here but I’m really excited about it. The rooms look cosy, the menu amazing and we might even be able to squeeze a game of golf in (or shopping, whichever suits ?).

Of course I haven’t even begun to talk about the roaring fires, snuggly jumpers, ankle boots (oh how I love an ankle boot), fluffy blankets and frosty mornings that all come courtesy of autumn but I’m ready for it. What have you got to look forward to in the coming season? It could be as simple as not having to shave your legs – I’m all for that!

I had to do mine yesterday because I was going for a massage – no other reason! xx

Ah I love this Suzanne, and the idea of writing down the things you have to look forward to. I have had terrible holiday blues since our summer holiday, and it’s always nice to have things to look forward to. Have a brilliant time in Cornwall, and enjoy your birthday being away. My hubby is also 47 in October half term x

I think he’s just a couple of days away from me, isn’t he? I’ve never had a birthday away from home before but actually I’m quite looking forward to it. I definitely put too high an expectation on my birthday (guilty again for Mother’s Day) so maybe being away I won’t so much – who knows?! xx

Sounds like you have so much to look forward to! How exciting. I love this, as it makes autumn feel more special rather than us all just mourning the change in weather. Enjoy your plans! Jess x

Yes I’m going to make it a regular feature because I totally think that having something to look forward to is a ‘thing’ don’t you? xx

  • You do have a lot to look forward to! I’m especially jealous of your trip to Cornwall. I hope it goes well. Would it be really negative of me to say that I haven’t got anything to look forward to?! I’m sure I’ll think of something at some point.

I’ve got a couple of things lined up to look forward to – first one being this weekend for a girly spa trip. I’ve never been overnight to one so I’m looking forward to total chill out!
OH and I are off to Brighton for 2 nights in december On Our Own!!
Enjoy your birthday and Cornwall – love it down there!???
