At Home With…Laura { Dear Bear and Beany}

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]nother month, another home to have a nosey around. This month it’s a new build, so if you’re likely to get properly jealous of a crisp, clean, beautifully tidy house, then look away now!

Laura and her family moved into their home last year and clearly adore it. In the style of Sir David Frost (or Keith Lemon if you prefer) “let’s go through the keyhole to find out what exactly they love about living in a new build.

Who lives in your home?

I live with my husband Andy and our 2 daughters, Alice and Holly.

Where do you live and how long have you lived in your home?

We live in Hampshire and we’ve been in our home for 11 months.

We moved house to be closer to Alice’s school. We were lucky to get into a school that we fell in love with and were out of catchment and always said that if she got a place we would move. We moved house 3 months after she started school and it was the best decision we made. It’s changed our lives for the better and we all feel really content here.

What were the first impressions of your home?

It was love at first sight. It is a new build and the finish is amazing. It’s everything I ever dreamed of owning. I still pinch myself that this is our home and I’m am having lots of fun with it. The layout is perfect for us and I can see it growing with us.

Have you had any major work done?

As it’s a new build there is nothing major that needs doing. The biggest jobs we’ve done are making the patio area bigger and boarding out the attic! Not that exciting, but essential for us.

What is your favourite room in the house?

Our lounge, it’s probably the most complete part of the house and I’m really pleased with how it turned out. I love that the layout of the room gives the girls their space and us our space. But that the two parts come together.

We took ages deciding whether to go with shutters or not in this room and I’m really pleased that we did. It has completely changed the feel of the room for the better and I love them. We have them across the whole of the downstairs and I now would like upstairs done too.

It’s a room that will change a lot over the next couple of years as the girls get older and the toys get smaller and probably move into their bedrooms.

Is there anything that you would change about your home if you could?

Because it’s a new build we haven’t been able to paint any walls until after we’ve been here a year (to let it settle etc). Whilst I can’t wait to add a bit of colour to some of the walls, I am also really nervous about doing it. I think because it’s new, what if I mess it up!

What is the next home project that we can look forward to seeing on your blog?

There are a few things on my list for 2018. Firstly, paint a few walls in various rooms. I’ve started to create some boards on Pinterest as to what I would like to do. I spend hours looking at ideas and interiors. Making our house a home is one of my favourite things to do.

Have a gallery wall going up our stairs. Each month we take family photos and I would love to have them all together in one place, where we can see the differences as the girls change over time.

And lastly change our bedroom furniture and the look of the room. We’ve had our furniture for a while now and whilst it fits ok in our new bedroom, we could make better use of the space if we had slightly different furniture. It’s not top of the list, but something we would like to get done eventually.

Laura’s favourite chair comes from HomeSense – the place for all unique bargains!

I love Laura’s style, don’t you? Her house looks so warm and cosy yet everything has its place. I’m also a huge fan of the white wooden shutters – good call Laura! Expensive but so worth it.

If you want to keep up with Laura’s family and her home projects then you can find her on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest.

Ah it’s lovely to see Laura’s beautiful new house. I had no idea it was a new build. How lovely to be able to totally make it your own from day one.

Yes I think that’s a huge advantage living in a new build isn’t it? A completely blank canvas.

  • Thank you for having me, I loved sharing our home x

  • It looks beautiful! I’m a huge fan of the wooden shutters too, would love some for our house. I love the little pops of colour and it definitely looks very inviting, lovely home xx

We’ve got them in our living room and although they were expensive, we are so pleased with them. Now I want our other rooms done too!

I think there are some fabulous benefits to a new build. We lived in one for five years when our children were very small. We have such fond memories of that house. xx

I love yellow in a living space, it’s so calming and really brightens up a fairly neutral decor. Thanks for dropping by! x

I love the wood and beautiful tones. So stylish. I adore the colour scheme and use of natural materials. I have a new build but it feels very bright & stark at times and yet this looks so homely. Lovely xx

Loving this series! I’m so nosey and love looking around other peoples homes. We are currently looking at moving into a new build, I know lots of people don’t like them – but I would love to have somewhere that I didn’t have to do the renovation work to! Looking forward to reading more in this series 🙂 xx

  • We moved into a new build nine years ago and it’s been great to have a blank canvas, not that I’ve really done much to it! Laura’s lounge looks lovely and inviting and I love that plant at the bottom of the stairs.

What an absolutely stunning Home she has. Love her decor and accessories too. So lovely.

  • Always good to have a nosy around other people’s houses and this one’s lovely! Although, I must admit I’m more of an old house kinda girl. I just love the old features and tall rooms. The clean lines and white walls are appealing though…

Yes I think at heart I like character too but there’s something so appealing about the clean lines and straight walls!
