5 Things I’m Looking Forward to in Spring 2020

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, there’s a fine line between organising too much and not organising enough. By nature (or is it habit?) I fall into the former category but I am trying my hardest to get nearer to the ‘spontaneity is the spice of life‘ end of the spectrum.

Either way, I think it’s important to have some things to look forward to. This doesn’t have to be big things that have been planned and booked in advance, it can equally be inevitabilities that we know bring us joy – I’m all for celebrating the ‘ordinary’ things in life.

A couple of years ago, I started sharing some of the things I was looking forward to as a new season approaches. Spring is just around the corner (promise!) so with that in mind, to follow are five things I’m looking forward to over the coming months…

1. Getting My Ankles Back Out

I actually think that winter clothes are my all-time favourites – ankle boots, jeans and chunky jumpers being staple wardrobe items. However, when any season ends, I cannot wait for a wardrobe refresh.  Getting my white (often a little hairy) ankles out in the winter months is an absolute no-no for me. I’m always cold, why make myself colder in the name of fashion?

So in spring, I’m looking forward to getting my trainers back out. I bought a new pair in the Mint Velvet sale, that I can’t wait to unleash on the world. Watch this space…

2. A Weekend Away with the Girls

I think it’s important to have a few things in the diary to look forward to and this is one of those ‘things’. About five years ago, my old uni pals and I went away together for the first time in 20 years. There really is nothing like reminiscing about barren fridges, shared wardrobes and freshers week, whilst sharing a bottle of wine.

Since then, we’ve tried to get together every year or at least every two years. In April, we are pulling out all the stops and staying away for two nights of glorious relaxation. I cannot wait.

3. Longer Days

Oddly, I’m not one for light mornings. I wake up as soon as the sun comes up so the later the better for me on that score. However, it’s been glorious to watch the clock tip past 5pm and it still being light outside. It puts a spring (pardon the pun) in my step and signals that summer is just around the corner.

The sunsets and sunrises have been pretty spectacular of late though, haven’t they?

4. Skiing à Deux

We took up skiing about nine years ago now; before then, neither of us had ever been. As a family with kids of both sexes and a mixture of ages, skiing has been a fabulous way to bring everyone together.

Thankfully we’ve all learnt to enjoy it and in fact, we got the bug so much that five years ago, we bought an apartment in Les Gets. We aim to go at least once a year as a family but my husband and I like to spend a few days out there on our own.

Last year, due to family commitments, we didn’t feel able to go but this year, with things being a little more settled, we booked a last-minute flight for the middle of March. After spending a week there with four teenagers during half-term, it promises to be a much-needed break that we are both very much looking forward to.

5. New Growth

The arrival of spring signals new growth – blossom, daffodils and the lawn being mowed once again. When I was in church a few weeks ago, a friend prayed for me…that I would see the arrival of spring in my life. It wasn’t until then, that I realised just how much I was longing for ‘spring’ in every sense of the word.

I am starting to sense this prayer being answered as I feel more settled and a fresh enthusiasm for life; long may it last!

What are you looking forward to in spring 2020?

  • How lovely that a friend prayed for you and so glad to read that that metaphorical spring is coming back into your life. I do love the spring. I love lighter mornings and evenings. As I wake at around 4.30am whatever the season, I’d much rather it was light! Enjoy your trips away with your husband and your friends! Both of those sound like very good ideas.

It’s nice to see some Spring-like weather this week, Suzanne, and I agree, it’s so nice to have a few things to look forward to. Enjoy your trips away (and getting your ankles out). Hope you all have a lovely March. xx
