Pink Denim, Soaking up the Rays and a Trip to the Beach #LittleLoves

garden room

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hat a month June has been. I mean I’ve had to pinch myself on numerous occasions, is this really England and not the mediterranean?

Our garden room really has come into its own this month, especially with the Word Cup being on. The space and big TV has made it a popular choice for 13 year old boys! I’ve also really enjoyed working outside, even though it’s very difficult to get motivated when the sun is shining.

I am sincerely hoping that this weather lasts, at least until next Thursday which is prom day. Think of us this time next week (I am writing this post on a Thursday, in case you’re confused) with a house full of excited 16 year olds plus parents and siblings. Actually, I’m not sure who’s more excited, my daughter or me! It feels like this has been a VERY long time in the making.

Anyway, enough about what’s happening in July (did I tell you we are going to New York in two weeks???!) let’s focus on June for a moment and all of the things that I have been loving…

READ

I’ve read more blogs than usual this month, mostly due to rediscovering my Bloglovin’ feed. I’d kind of forgotten about this platform but it is an easy way to keep up with blogs that you love to dip in and out of.

I loved this post from Forever Amber where she discussed whether it is or isn’t acceptable to just “pop in” on people. It really had me laughing and nodding along, Amber has a very good way with words.

Rising Strong by Brene Brown

I’ve also resurrected Rising Strong by Brene Brown this month. I love this woman’s wise words but I have to be in the right frame of mind to take it on board. A friend kindly bought me this book a couple of years ago and I just couldn’t absorb it. This time round, the words are jumping out of the page at me. Funny how that happens with books sometimes isn’t it?

HEARD

You already know how much I love a podcast. I discovered two new ones this month that I’m really excited to share with you.

First up is Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast; I literally devoured her latest series in about three days. She interviewed some amazing guests but my favourite was her interview with Matt Haig who wrote Reasons to Stay Alive. This episode was thought-provoking, incredibly moving and entertaining to boot. Please do go and have a listen, you won’t be disappointed.

My second Podcast of the Month is Emma Gannon’s Ctrl Alt Delete. Emma interviews some really interesting guests from Trinny Woodall (of Trinny and Susannah fame) to the infamous Junior Doctor, Adam Kay. My favourite episode this month was her live episode with author Dolly Alderton. Simply put, it was highly entertaining and made my gym workout a much more pleasant experience.

I always like to add on a favourite song that I’ve been singing/playing over and over again for the last 30 days (much to my children’s infuriation). This month, the prize goes to Tom Walker with his amazing song, Leave a Light On.

WATCHED

Between the World Cup and Love Island, I’ve not watched a lot this month. Sorry, did I forget to mention that I’ve inadvertently become completely hooked on Love Island?

I began watching it because my girls wanted to and since having teenagers, I’ve learnt to live by the motto ‘If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em’. My intention was to keep an eye on it with a view to opening up a moral discussion when appropriate. In reality they won’t let me utter a word while the show is airing! It’s serious business you know. The husband and I even found ourselves watching it on our own the other evening. I don’t even recognise myself any more.

In other news, we watched a lovely film on Netflix a couple of weeks ago – Miracles from Heaven. If you’re looking for something that’s a suitable watch for all ages with a heart-warming message behind it, this is the one! Jennifer Garner plays the role of a mother who is trying desperately to hold her family together when tragedy strikes. It’s a true story and blew us all away.

MADE

Does a gin and tonic count? No, I thought not.

We did make a a rather lovely trip to the beach a few weeks ago. I had promised my eldest daughter that while she was off work, we could take the dogs to the beach and let them have a run around.

Our nearest coastline is about 90 minutes away so it was a bit of a trek but so worth it. West Wittering is a stunning beach and I did wonder why we don’t go more often. We all loved the fresh air and it proved to be the perfect escapism from daytime TV and Candy Crush (her not me!).

We did wish we had checked the tide times before leaving (rooky mistake) but this little estuary provided the perfect area to paddle in.

WORE

The truth is, I’ve worn as little as possible this month! It’s been so darn hot but I’m not complaining.

The beginning of the month was slightly cooler so I lived in my two denim jackets which are the perfect throw on over a summer outfit.

The blue one is from Hush and I’ve had for about 3 years – definitely a ‘best buy’ in my wardrobe. The pink one is a new buy, from Mango. It’s more of an over-sized fit which I’m not used to wearing but quite like for a different look.  My wardrobe is fully of colour though so I haven’t got a lot to wear with it. I’ll have to work on that won’t I?!

And Lastly…

It’s been a really busy month at home with loads of changes afoot. My eldest daughter has given up her job at the stables, deciding instead to apply for a place at college with a view to becoming a nurse. I think this has come at just the right time for her and I can’t wait to see how things pan out.

My youngest daughter has finished her GCSEs and is therefore at home, mostly working on her sun tan! It’s odd only having one child going to school .

I’ve almost finished my training to become a crisis counsellor on a text line, which I’ll be starting next week. I’m really nervous but glad to be doing something worthwhile in a field that is close to my heart.

That just about wraps up the month of June, probably my favourite one so far this year. I hope it’s been a good one for you.

  • What a month you’ve all had! You must be so relieved the GCSEs are over. Good luck to your girl for her college course and to you for your counselling.

What a lovely round up, Suzanne, the weather lately has made such a difference hasn’t it? Oh, I love Brene Brown too, I heard her on Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations podcast the other day – another one for you to check out. Thankyou for the other podcast recommendations – I’ll definitely be looking up the Fearne Cotton one. And the Netflix film too – we’ve found it so difficult lately to find any recent films that we can all enjoy xx

Great that your daughter has decided to become a nurse, such an important profession. I’m loving this weather too and there’s no happiness quite like that of a dog on a beach!

Sounds like a lovely month. Jealous of the fact that you go to New York in a couple of weeks – I’ve never been and am desperate to go! I love Fearne’s Podcast too, it’s fab – enjoyed the episode with Dawn French in particular. Glad you made a trip to the beach, it does wonders for the soul. Enjoy the month ahead xx

Sounds like you have had a lovely month, your garden looks like a perfect suntrap. I hope prom went well and she enjoys her summer topping up her tan. My daughter will be doing her GCSE’s next year and still has no idea what she would like to do job wise. I hope you have a lovely July, very jealous of the trip to New York xx #likedandloved

I do love your garden space. Very jealous of the area, looks so peaceful. I’m so glad the exams are over for you. x

I can just imagine sitting at your table blogging away with that view, your garden and home are stunning. Aw prom, it’s so exciting isn’t it, and even though I had a teen boy that jumped in to the shower about 25 minutes before he left the house, it was still an amazing night. I love the sound of the film and will definitely catch it on Netflix x

  • I’m not sure which I am more jealous of, the New York trip, your garden or those trousers! What a brilliant month, I love having a trip to look forward and your daughter has my admiration for training to be a nurse.

Thank you for linking up with #LikedandLoved

It sounds like a lovely month – I hope you had a great time in New York! I think I must be the only person in the UK not watching Love Island at the moment! #LittleLoves

  • Morgana

I bet having the space in your garden has been invaluable the last couple of months! Especially if it meant you got a break from the World Cup 😉
Brene Brown is just so inspiring isn’t she? I wish I could really make all she says sink into my brain properly! xx

  • Kerri-Ann

I actually can’t believe how addicted I have become to Love Island, Simon isn’t happy with me and cannot wait for it to end. I LOVE your garden space so much. I hope you had a fab time in NYC x #littleloves
