Fond Memories, a Perfect Moment and Total Relaxation #LittleLoves

Here we are again, on the cusp of the weekend and another week down. Since I last wrote on this here blog, I’ve been to the Alps and back. I’ve also experienced snow, sunshine, rain and freezing fog. No wonder I’m having trouble working out what season we are in!

Either way, Spring we are so ready for you – please stop hibernating. Here are all of the things I’ve been loving this week – be warned, it’s a little snow/ski heavy!

Read

I’m a creature of habit and one of the things I like to do, is buy a Red magazine every time I go on holiday. So I’ve devoured the April edition of Red this week and found many a brilliant article in there. I was pleased to see a whole feature on Mental Health in teenage girls and the interview with Emma Freud and her daughter was particularly enlightening. I can relate to a lot of what Emma wrote as a mother who after four years, continues to support her daughter through depression. Very helpful comments from both mother and daughter.

I also read a couple of great blog posts this week – one from Morgana on Instagrammers worth following and a very brave post from Not So Smug Now, on her break up with alcohol. It sounds weird but I felt so proud of her for writing it – it must have taken a lot of guts.

Watched

Boyhood is a film that has been on my ‘must see’ list for a while now. I’ve heard good things about it and I thought it would be one that the husband and I might enjoy whilst on holiday.

The real truth is that I watched it whilst he slept off his day’s skiing, occasionally grunting in the right places and asking me how long it was going on for!

Boyhood

It is 2 hours and 45 minutes long so yes, a bit drawn out but it’s so clever. Basically a coming of age story, following the life of a boy called Mason, all the way through from 6 years to 18. The whole thing was filmed across 12 years, with the same cast. A pretty bold risk but one that pays off.

If you’re nosy like me and looking to prepare yourself for life with a son, it’s a simple but great watch.

Heard

I delved into the world of podcasts this week by subscribing to Sara Tasker’s Hashtag Authentic. Sara from Me and Orla, shares hints and tips for anyone in the world of online creativity but particularly with regard to blogging and social media. The one I listened to this week was about following your creative instincts. I love Sara’s gently tone, oozing with humility despite her 156k followers on Instagram!

I tried to savour every moment of our 4 day ski break and on one occasion, I had to pinch myself – beautiful blue skies, the most amazing views and a coffee in my hand. Could it be more perfect?

Mont CheryThere was a live band playing in this particular restaurant and as we were chatting, they struck up the chords of a song very familiar to me – The Girl from Ipanema by Frank Sinatra. It’s coming up to the first anniversary of my Grandad’s death and this was one of his favourite songs to play on the keyboard. Funny how little moments can send the fond memories flooding back isn’t it?

Made

Some pretty nifty skiing moves – does that count? I first went skiing 5 years ago, as a 40th birthday treat. It is something that I had always wanted to try and basically, didn’t want to die not having given it a go. I decided that 40 was probably my last chance to pick up a new, active hobby, and I was right! Not because it’s physically demanding (well it is but…) more because it brings out the fear in me like nothing else.

Whilst I have a bit more style (yes I’m tooting my own horn) my husband does not have the same fear factor and this means that he is ultimately a better skier. I asked him to take a photograph of me skiing on this gloriously empty slope but instead he took a video (good job I’m not attempting pro blogger status!).

I will never be one to throw myself down the black runs at great speed, this red run is just perfect for me So if you want to know the ins and outs of skiing post 40, I’m your expert!

Wore

skiing post 40

Guess what? My ski gear and a smile! I’ve also lived in jeans this week so nothing particularly pretty to photograph for you I’m afraid. I continue to be tortured by my Invisalign braces but I’ve got into a better routine with them now. I’m still not sure how I’ll stick with them for the whole 12-15 months but I’m determined to finally have teeth that I’m not trying to hide all the time.

And lastly…

I get slightly annoyed by social media when a tragedy has occurred, so I tend to avoid it. London was the chosen target this week and although what happened was a horrific and senseless act, I am once again reminded that we are so blessed to be living in a country where hardships are few and far between. Many countries across the world are living through the most horrendous nightmares on a daily basis. I’ll just leave you with this sentiment.

Broken world

  • Glad you had a good few days away, you certainly deserve the break! You look so happy there. It’s great to see someone high profile like Emma Freud sharing the story of her daughter’s mental health. I watched Boyhood when it came out and although it was very good, I was possibly a little underwhelmed by it. I think it had been bigged up too much!

I totally agree with you on the Boyhood – it was gently interesting but it didn’t blow me away. I was really looking forward to it so yeah, a tad disappointed. x

What a lovely quote! A film shot over 12 years! Wow that’s quite the commitment! You look like you had a brilliant time skiing. I’ve never tried it myself, perhaps it’ll be my thing to try when I turn 40. We’ve been to the Sierra Nevada when we lived in Spain and loved it up there, but I was on baby duty so only my partner got to try his hand at skiing. He loves it though, so maybe one day we’ll go back. Have a lovely weekend x

That view is amazing! Such blue skies!! Sounds like Skiing was great! You look very happy indeed!! Have a wonderful weekend. Popping over from #littlelove xx

  • So pleased you had a lovely few days away, you both deserve it after the year you’ve had, and there’s nothing better than skiing for blowing the cobwebs away! I think mountain air just does something good for the soul #LittleLoves

  • Lauranne

That video has really made me want to give skiing another try. I went with the ex but haven’t been since we broke up… maybe next year!

Glad you had a good break, very much deserved! I’ve never read Red magazine, may have to pick up next months copy. Have a lovely weekend xx

Wow, I love your skiing video, it looks so idyllic! I’m glad you had such a brilliant break, I’m sure it was much needed. I’m heartened by the fact you took up skiing so recently too, I’m 37 this year and my husband doesn’t think he’ll manage skiing next Winter so I’m hoping it won’t be too late for me to give it a go the following Winter.

I’m not a big magazine reader but that copy of Red looks really interesting – might have to pick one up when I next have a longer journey or holiday!

  • Donna

I love that quote at the end. It looks like you have had a great time skiing – you seem to be there all the time! I am envious of the beautiful blue sky and you looks so graceful skiing! x

  • Helena

It’s so important to spread awareness of health and that quote on the end definitely makes you think. #LittleLoves

  • Morgana

What a beautiful quote at the end, a sentiment that we all need to hold on to.
Thanks for the shout out, so pleased you enjoyed the post. I too love Sara’s podccasts, I’m working my way through the back catalogue now and there is so much inspiration in them all.
It looks like you’ve had the best few days away skiiing. I’ve always wanted to give it a try, maybe sometime in the future. xx
